Chapter One
About the Subject
I'm a researcher and educator, working in education, technology, and psychology. After a degree in Economics, Politics & International Relations, and then a MSc in Computer Science as well as a PGCE in Primary Education – I became fascinated by how technology shapes the way we learn, with a particular interest in neurodiversity and mental health. Alongside working at Wrexham University, I contribute to CIRITTL and the Wales Collaborative for Learning Design, and run Athronydd Research & Consulting.
In practice this means moving comfortably between disciplines – turning fuzzy problems into things people can actually use – and treating each new field as a subject to be studied from first principles.1 1. A habit, the subject concedes, that makes for slow progress and a tendency to wander.
Neurodiversity /ˌnjʊərə(ʊ)dʌɪˈvɜːsɪti/ – the natural variation in how human minds work – in attention, learning, mood, and social style – approached as difference to be understood and accommodated rather than deficit to be corrected; cf. neurotypical.
